The Bee Improvement Programme for Cornwall, or BIPCo, was first established in 2009 by a small group of like-minded beekeepers whose aim was to select and improve bees of native or near native strain. Bees are assessed and selected for purity of strain by appearance, morphometry and/or DNA analysis and also for good temper, low swarming propensity, good brood pattern and health, and for good honey production.
BIPCo aims to encourage beekeepers to work together to select and improve their bees, as an alternative to the constant import of bees. In this way it is believed a hardy, locally adapted bee will result which will provide a sustainable solution to the problems facing the honey bee.
